This was really a fun event for my wife and me.  It was the first one that we were running together for say as her with her new last name.  And also us running the same distance as a married couple.  My goal was to beat my last years time  of 20:30 and if all possible go sub 20.   My last 5k was about a month ago and I ran it at around 22:00 or so.

So we got in a good nights rest and headed out to what we were hoping was good weather and a good time with friends at the race.  And boy did we have both.  The weather was just perfect.  Around 55 or so I would say at the first.  Only a few clouds in the sky if any.  It started at 7:30 and we got in a good warm up and ran into Kathie, Kimmie and Smooth on our warm up.  And then ran into Lark and Marcie after then close to the end of the warm up.  Hit the port a potties and it was all good.  Lined up a few people back which I kind of regretted since there was a few kids that took off fast and then stood there and looked back when there parents told them to slow down.  There is only really one big hill on this run.  And its just a bit before the first mile mark.  It is a short one though just enough to slow you down if you let it.  Then a gradual downhill to mile too.  The first mile was feeling good and was able to keep relaxed.  I was finally getting some space between me and a few other runners here.  And could find my pace and relaxed a bit more.  Then a bit after the 2nd mile the steep downhill came.   Its not all steep at once but enough to make you want to slow down.  But thought I would take advantage of it and pushed hard down it.  And hit the 2nd downhill a bit after that.  But it was taking its toll on me with about half a mile to go.  Had a hard time finding paces after those hills and struggled as we came into the last portion.  Which was to run around a HS track.  Was pushing to just hold on to whatever I had left and as we came into the final turn.  The 2 people infront of me took off.  And left me with no response till after they were a few more strides ahead.  I am sure they were able to make it in with a sub 20 and me with a 20:03-4.  I am sure if I would of kicked it when they did I would of kept with them for my sub.  But I felt really good about this race.  Beating my time from last year by 26 secs.  And feeling really good about my return back after my injury.

Last year I wasnt able to stay for the raffle I had to race home and move.  This time I was able to cheer for my wife that came in shortly after me.  And all my friends along with her.  We set up camp with Aleeessaa and her daughter.  Aleeeesssaa sister and husband and there kids.  Was able to hang some with Kathie, Kimmie, there mom and Kimmies daughter which both Mom and daughter got hardware.  Smooth was there cramping at the end again>:(  But still coming in fast enough to take home hardware again along with Lark.  Ran into Marcie and Slick with his group of guys again after the race.  And was somewhat shocked to get hardware again this year myself.  Last year they sent me a 5th place plaque.  This year I took 2nd in my AG which was shocking to me.  I was hoping to just place and with the 26 sec improvement from last years was awesome.  And I must say they gave away some very very nice raffle prizes.  I think the only thing we got in our whole group was a 100 bucks prize at the end to Kathie and Kimmie fast mom.  But they gave away bikes, ipods, laptops, camcorders and all sorts of stuff.  It went on for over a hour.  Great event with friends and only cost me 8 bucks.  Best 8 bucks I have spent in a long time.

Wasnt a sub 20 but was very very close.  I am sure with a bit more speedwork I will be getting it this year for sure.  And feeling that I have recovered from Ogden and ready for Ragnar.   With SGM training cycle starting the week of Ragnar.  I just need to go out a bit later tonight for another 10.:)

PM-  Went out around 4:30pm for another 10 miles.  Just made it a easy long run.  With no real pace goal.  Just get in the miles and we did.  Felt good finally after the first 4 or so.

From Andy on Sat, Jun 06, 2009 at 16:28:18 from 207.155.176.10

Great race, Mark. Good to see each mile faster than the previous. You are definitely in shape for a sub 20. With everybody that was there, I am really regretting not running it.

From Smooth on Sat, Jun 06, 2009 at 16:37:07 from 71.36.86.252

CONGRATS! You did awesome! LOOK at those negative splits. You're getting faster and stronger. If you had lined up ahead of those kids, you would have gotten your sub-20. It was so fun to be hanging with you and Kristi. I had to laugh about her wearing your wedding band for you. BQ at SGM, here you come!!!!

From DonGardinero on Sat, Jun 06, 2009 at 17:04:07 from 75.162.169.49

Congrats Mark!!! I just know you are going to BQ this year at SGM.

From Huans32 on Sat, Jun 06, 2009 at 21:10:16 from 24.2.68.35

Allie- Thanks Allie it was a lot of fun and great prizes.

Andy- I think you should of come. You would of had a lot of fun and if you had your little ones they would of loved it too. You will have to put that one on your calendar for next year. I am sure we are all going to go back again.:)

Smooth- LOL yeah I went back to the car to drop that off and grab my hat. Ended up getting my hat at least.:) She is a sweetheart for holding it for me. Thanks for making it to the race too. Its always so much better with you there.

Dale- Thanks Dale. I sure hope so. And also I hope we do that turkey trot again this year. I am so wanting to go sub 20 and that course I am sure I will be able to.

Fantastic race report and nice job on the finish. That is a great time, for sure.

AWESOME JOB! That kind of speed blows me away, really! Bummer for no raffle prizes, but you got some "hardware," so that is good!

From Cal on Sun, Jun 07, 2009 at 02:43:59 from 76.27.9.237

Way to race there Mark. Very nice mile times!

Great mileage for the day too.

From Mike Warren on Sun, Jun 07, 2009 at 09:02:47 from 208.117.124.133

Great time Mark! Very impressed with your last mile. You ran a smart race and no doubt if you want the sub 20, it's yours for the taking anytime.

From Rhett on Sun, Jun 07, 2009 at 12:22:17 from 216.67.217.252

Nice Mark, you came so close to sub 20 and without much speed work. A little speed work and you smash 20. Now to focus on that BQ time. You obviously have the speed to do it, just need to build up the endurance to hold on for 26.2. I have no doubt you can do it.

From argentinerocket on Mon, Jun 08, 2009 at 00:04:56 from 98.204.55.168

Wow, MrFit can run! Congratulations Mark, great race and fun report!

From Huans32 on Mon, Jun 08, 2009 at 09:32:17 from 138.64.2.76

Jun- Thanks Jun. I had a great time.

Kelli- Oh yeah we had better odds getting hardware then we did prizes. But it was still alot of fun. And we are for sure putting that one on the calendar for next year. Great family run.

Cal- Getting there. I will get that sub 20 one of these days.:) Those added 10 were tough be good.

Mike- Oh it was there for the taking. I guess I just wasnt wanting it bad enough. I wasnt watching my watch well enough to know just where I was. Next time will be it.

Rhett- Oh I tell you what. That race was a huge confidence builder going into SGM training cycle. The time for a 5k is 20:05 for the 3:15 so I am right on for it. Now to just get in all the runs and xtraining. It will be a should be the year.

Lucia- Thanks Lucia.:)

YOU ROCK!!!

What an awesome time ... plus only 5 seconds shy of a sub-20. If things were not so crowded who knows!!!

You amaze me!!!

Nice job Mark-O!!! :)

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jun 08, 2009 at 15:43:23 from 64.81.245.109

Congratulations on a PR. To break 20:00, go to a flat road or a track, mark every quarter (if on the road), then practice running 94 second quarters continuously until failure. Get a pacer that does not struggle at that pace, some people in your area - Fritz, James Moore (Fiddy), Walter, Chad, Adam RW, or Steve Ashbaker. Or if you want to come down to Provo for this, Jeff and I can pace you.

From Huans32 on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 08:59:07 from 138.64.2.76

Teena- Thanks Teena. Yeah I was close to it again. But I am not complaining I am just happy to be back close to where I was last year. We will get it.

Sasha- I will do that. I have been lacking speedwork. And that sounds like a great workout to do. I will have to hit up Walter for some help then.

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 11:16:37 from 71.219.74.247

Walter runs with us most days at our running group---just one more incentive to get you two to come!

From MarcE on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 22:18:15 from 24.155.140.8

Mark-O!!!! Great race, report, and day overall! I could feel the excitement in your report. You ran negative splits...something I've never done...in any race! :) You'll get that sub 20:00 soon enough. Great comeback from your injury, and way to keep the speed...even after getting married! :)
