House sitting at my parents while they are away.  And tried out their treadmill.  Ran the first 1.5 at a 8:30 pace 1% incline.  Then 1.5-5 at a 8:00 pace.  Last mile was 7:19 to finish it off.  The first bit was a bit rough getting use to the feel of the treadmill.  But it felt alot better at a faster pace on it.  Ankle felt great today.  I would say back to 100% now.

Great workout, Mark. It's funny how different treadmills feel than running outside.

Glad your ankle is all better.

Mark...

I've actually been running a lot on the treadmill lately. I've gotten so bored with the scenery around the neighborhood. I really need to get outside and do more runs. Starting next week I'm going to add a couple of hills runs during the week. If I run east from my house, it's a steady climb, close to 300 feet for 3 miles then I'd turn around and come back down.

Good job. Running on treadmill is different. I think it's a great xtraining tool. You use the running muscles a little differently. It's gentler on the joints. It keeps you on pace for great tempo or interval workout. It's a great subsitute for days when you can't run outside due to weather, road conditions or other reasons.

From Rhett on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:43:27

Nice workout Mark. I use the treadmill at least once a week. Like Smooth said, I love it for tempo runs. To use it for speed work, I have to be doing mile repeats. Anything shorter and I feel like I'm always pressing buttons.

From huans32 on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 16:40:33

Yeah I have done alot of runs on treadmills. I would say just about 90% of all my runs last yr was on them. Only a few long runs and races were on the roads. I enjoy doing my speedwork on them so I know I am hitting the right paces.

From Kathie on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 16:54:06

I have just started doing more runs outside. I like running outside better because when you are 3 miles from your house you have to get home some how but while I am on the treadmill I am constantly convincing my self to finish the run. I agree with Smooth and Rhett though speed work is a lot easier on the treadmill.

Mark...

Well now I don't feel so bad for running so much on the treadmill. I DO need to get out and at least run hills when I go outside. Are you talking about 2007 or 2008? I definitely like the treadmill for building speed. It has helped me a lot.

From Becca on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 22:09:16

I agree...treadmills are great for speedwork! Otherwise I'm always surprised (and usually not pleasantly) by my pace!

From huans32 on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:55:13

Dale- It was 2007 that I ran on treadmills since I was going to the gym. 2008 half way through I started hitting outside mostly after striders half.

Becca- I hear you. They are different feels on one. I do like the feel of outside with the temps and such. Besides you see more people for the most part.

From Andy on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 14:19:41

I think that you are not getting the full benefits of a speed workout if you are doing them on the treadmill. One thing that you are trying to accomplish is to get a feel for a certain pace and holding it when you get tired. When you do it on a treadmill you are not teaching your body what that pace feels like and what to do when it is no longer comfortable. With that said, I understand that it is necessary to do these types of workouts on the treadmill during the winter because it is very difficult to do them on snow or ice covered roads.

From RivertonPaul on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 14:45:54

As a very experienced treadmill runner (too experienced probably), you have to also be careful as to the calibration of the treadmill. Too many times you are running either faster or slower than the treadmill indicates, so like Andy says, you don't get an accurate feel for your workout.

Ya I think you guys are right that is for sure. And it doesnt really help you much when it comes times for a race like a 5k. But on the other hand it does help with your confidence at faster speeds and also form. I am looking forward to running outside again here soon.

From DonGardinero on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 15:35:24

I agree with all of you guys. I did improve my 5k time by running only on the treadmill, though. I ran the Utah Human Race 5k and I hadn't run outside since SGM. I know I need to get outside. Friday I will when both kids are in school.
