I was needing to run this one to finish up the running series to get into SGM.  So I went down with my father which is also doing the series.  What a gorgeous day for a race.  At the first part waiting for the buses it was quite chilly.  And we had to sit around waiting for the buses to get there.  Bumped into some people I know from the forum and hung out with them.  And looked hard for Dale.  The buses finally pulled in around 10 mins to or less before 9 which was the starting time.   So Dad and I talked racing tactics.  Mostly for him was just to not go to fast at the first and make it to the end.  Due to the lack of training.  I am thinking he last run was the Painters 5k 2 months ealier.   As for me I was going to push it on this run and see what my body was able to do.  I feel my foot sprang going away and needed to know where I was fitness wise.   So the buses rolled in up top of Snow canyon.  What a beautiful place.  First mile of it was on the main road.  Then for the next 2.5 or so it was on a bike trail.  Which was nice sice there was a cap of 700 runners.  And I think they came very close to it.  Since I was on the 3rd to the last bus I got in line about the middle of the pack.  And ran into Dale.

Finally the gun went off and we were off.  I quickly decided to say my goodbyes to Dale and my Dad.  And took off keeping the pace nice and quick.  Yet was confortable.  And started passing people.  So with the first mile done we hit the bike trail.  At this point I figured I wouldnt be seeing anyone that I knew to the end.  As I was cruising along at about 1.4 miles into it I noticed Smooth up ahead.  And caught up with her.  I was shocked to see her up there.  And said Smooth what are you doing up here or something like that.  She responded running.  I knew it was a quick pace.  And looked at my watch.  To my suprise that last mile was a 6:30 pace at the moment and .50 miles into that leg.  So I quickly informed her of how fast she as going.  Which she said back "oh I am going to pay for this later".   I just said I hope not.  And wished her luck and kept going.  As I got to mile 2 still was passing a few people not as much now.  There was another gal that was about the same pace as me passing everyone too.  So as we hit the 3 mile mark or so just leaving the canyon.  Started to pace each other and chat some.  Which was odd and hard for me in a 10k.  Mostly since I think the paces for me was a bit tough and I was gasping for air.  Mile 4 had a small yet noticable hill and again another around 5.  Which is where I lost her.  And became road kill to 4-5 people till the end of the race.  I was only able to past 2 people in the last .2 of the race.  I felt it was a good effort and that I ran a good race.  The pace was maybe a bit to fast in the canyon area which cost me time in that last mile.  But still feel the 6 min or so improvement from the 10k I did a month ago a great improvement.  So hoping to continue to ramp of the miles and toss in a bit more speed work.  Here are the splits..

Mile 1  7:16

Mile 2  6:50

Mile 3  6:39

Mile 4  7:02

Mile 5  7:17

Mile 6  8:01

Mile 6.2  6:11

TT 44:18  AP 7:09

After I finished my race I was able to go back and run with Smooth in under 48 mins.  And then meet up with alot of other friends.  I went back about half a mile and found my dad.  He was suffering and was wanting to walk a few times.  Yet we were able to make in about 1:14 with some change.  I am proud of him for doing it.  Hopefully he will pick up this training for SG now since now we are in.  Later I was able to go to Pizza Factory and meet up with my forum friends.  Dale was also there from the blog.  And then took off back home to be with my GF that wasnt able to come down due to the sudden change in plans with work.:(

Mark!!! You are an amazing runner!!! I don't know how you can still run that fast with what little training you've had over the past few months. I'm glad your ankle is feeling better. It was great seeing you before and after the race. I'm glad you found me in the crowd of people. I looked all over for you before and after the race. It's always fun running that first mile because it feels so effortless, but we all pay for it later in the race. The same thing happened to me the last mile.

Dale- Thanks Dale. Wasnt a PR but was my 2nd best 10k. Felt good though and was great to run into you also. Dang your looking slim. And I think at the moment we are the same weight too.:) Lets see how the mileage goes for me. And I might be running Odgen with you.

MisFit- Nah I am the lucky one. She is the greatest.:):)

Mark...I better wait until after I do the Striders Half marathon on April 4th before I set a time goal. That race is the first half of the Ogden Marathon and I think you ran it last year. How was it? Is it a nice steady decline in elevation? are there a lot of rolling hills? I've seen the elevation map and it looks like it's a nice gentle slope until mile 8 or 9 and then it's a slight incline until the half way point. Is that right?

Good race! I wish I could have been more disciplined to hold off on that first mile. I think it was wise of you.

Sorry your GF couldn't make it. I was VERY happy mine could.

Excellent race, Mark!! Great report. I love all the details. Congrats to your Dad, too!! Now I need to get me into SGM, somehow, so we can run it together. Glad your ankle issue is behind you.

Hey Mark great run ... so did your GF stay home just so she wouldn't beat you?

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 18:47:19 from 71.36.65.79

Mark!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!! You ran a great race! If you had been in the front of the pack you could have easily made it under 44. But it's all good! I am most happy to hear that your ankle is all healed up and you're ready to vamp it up for Ogden. Once again, THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH for running in with me AGAIN. I just love that great positive attitude of yours. Oh, I love visiting with your mom and dad after the race. They have your genes of gentle kindness. They agreed with me that your GF is an angel and hoping for the "M" word. :)

From huans32 on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 22:46:49 from 71.35.218.186

Dale- Hmm on the strider half its mostly the first half of the full. But with some small changes. The first 6 miles are downhill till the lake. And then its rolling hills for another 6 I would say. The last bit seemed uphill also. So its is good and challenging.

Jon- Sorry I didnt see you at this race like at Painters. You did awesome those faster miles are great. I like to take the first mile slower. I didnt get to do any warm up either. So had to take it easier.

Marc- Yeah I hope you will be able to make it to SG also. Would be awesome if you joined Jeff and I for it. I think we are still both got our sights on BQ there and running it together as much as we can. I am just glad that I am in now. It was alot easier doing those 2 then doing the grand slam.:)

Clay- I sorry I missed you must missed you. Since I saw Smooth coming and ran up to join her coming in.

Kathie- Nah she found out Fri morning that she had to stay and go to a confrence. So she couldnt go down. She was a bit upset to say the least. But very happy that I came back after the race.:)

Smooth- I dont know if I could of gone faster. I got back in the middle of the pack for just the reason of taking that first bit slower since I didnt warm up much. It was a good test of my fitness and so I am happy. Now to start ramping up the long runs for Ogden. Oh I love to run with you. Mostly so if Charle comes around I can help you faster. It was great to see Larry right there too. :) Yea MissFit is a angel. Oh it will be coming soon.:)

Congratulations on a really nice run Mark. Looks like you are still in really good shape even with the lack of training due to the ankle problems. You should be good and ready to go at SGM.
