Had a few goals coming into race.  One was to beat my cramps and not have any for the whole race.  Been tring a few different things to take care of them.  And really didnt know what I was really going to go for  goal time.  But as I was telling my dad that was running the 5k.  Expect me between 3-4 hrs.  So I was planning to run it slower the first few miles then pick it up and then drop it back at the end.  And see how it goes.  I was going to use some S! caps on this race to see if it would help with my cramping.  Went into it well hydrated and just wanted to have a good race.  Meet up with Andy at the first of the race and a few other friends.  And headed up to the start.  There was rain hitting us hard around 4ish in the morning.  And then let up.  So was wondering if that was going to be a problem for the race.  Well we got on the bus and head up.  Got there with 30 mins till showtime.  Temps were very nice.  Chilly but not bad really at all.  So hit the PoP and drop stuff off.  Ran with one of my friends for the first 14 mile till she had to drop some stuff off.  And so I just kept going with the pace.  The first miles were a bit faster then I was planning for.  Wanted to hit for 3 miles 8ish or so.  But kind of ran confort wise more then paces.  And just felt good so we kept it there.  As I left her I tried to pick it up for the flat and some hilly areas.  And did ok and then lost my GPS around 20-22 or so till around 25 or so.  So not sure of the final splits.  Could of pushed it more.  But stuck with my plan of relaxing the last bit.  Around 22 is where I started to relax.  As for the cramping I didnt have any at all till the very very end just about crossing the line when I was trying to sprint across the line.  And even then it just tightened up.  Finished with a final of 3:35:02 and a nice PR of 4 mins or so.  Here are the splits for the race...

Mile 1 7:46

Mile 2 7:40

Mile 3 7:38

Mattrow- You did great on your first race for sure man. I am not sure if I ran by you or not. But you had a great race too.

Andy- Thanks man. Overcoming the cramps was a big win for me.

JD- Thanks I am hoping the training will only get me that much closer still. I have learned alot for being on this blog too.

Jon- Thanks Jon it was a great day. Couldnt ask for anything better.

Paul- Thanks Paul Sorry I didnt run into you at this race. I am sure too by the time I got to the finish line you were long gone. Great job man.

TEENA- Thanks your the best. I ran into 2 of your gumpchumps at the finish too. They did great too. Ryan and Rick I think. Was good to see them. Your going to do so great at SG too. Keep it up.

Mike- Thanks Mike the time isnt close to my BQing time. But really helped me overcome some big hurdles I have been fighting with. And SG with be where I can push my limits more. Are you going to go for your 3:15 there too?? The offer still stands for you to run with Jeff and me.

Lybi- Thanks Lybi. I am so looking forward to SG. I can only hope it will be the race I get my BQ.

Mark, I have been debating going for a sub 3 at STG. Back in Feb, that was the goal. I had a stress fracture in my Tibia and lost my fitness. Sub 3 is a long shot. I think what I will do, is run with the 3:10 group until the top of Veyo hill. From there I will either stay in the pack or try to run hard in.

Sweet race dude! I am so glad to hear that those dang cramps were not an issue today. With a couple of nice easy weeks you should be ready to go for SGM.

From Tom on Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 20:49:13

Great job man! You ran smart and the great training is starting to pay off. Glad to hear the cramps weren't a problem.

From Cal on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 19:33:07

Nice race Mark! Great job on getting your PR! I think it will fall again big time at SGM.
